Some Windsor area services not available over the holidays

A number of municipal services across Windsor-Essex County will be shutdown over the Christmas holidays, including administrative offices and garbage collection.

The 211 Windsor-Essex helpline for community and social services will remain available 24/7.

But the city’s administrative offices and the 311 centre will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.

The city said there will be no residential garbage, yard waste, and recycling collection on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. The collections will be delayed by one day each week during the holiday period. Nighttime commercial and weekly recycling collections will not be delayed. Front-end loader trash collection on Dec. 25, will be rescheduled to Dec. 24 or 26. 

Christmas tree and yard waste collections will take place the week of Jan. 13 in “A” zones and the week of Jan. 20 in “B” zones.

The public drop-off and household chemical waste depots at Central Avenue and North Service Road East will also be closed Dec. 25-26, and Jan. 1.

Municipal ticket payment offices will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26, and Jan. 1.

All Windsor Public Library branches will be closed from Dec. 24 to 26, on Dec. 31, and Jan. 1.

The city is reminding citizens to check Transit Windsor’s online holiday schedule for details on an adjusted holiday bus service. There will be no tunnel bus service on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Schedules and route maps are available at TransitWindsor.ca.

All city rinks and arenas will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 and reopen on Dec. 27. Lanspeary Lions Outdoor Rink will reopen for regular rentals on Dec. 26.  All community rinks will close again at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and reopen Jan. 2 for regular rentals.

The WFCU Centre arena will be open on Dec. 31 as the Windsor Spitfires take on the Flint Firebirds starting at 2:05 p.m.

The city will be offering a Holiday Camp for Kids aged four to 13 on Dec. 24, 26-27, 30-31 and Jan. 2-3 at four locations — Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex, Forest Glade Community Centre, Gino and Liz Marcus Community Complex, and Optimist Community Centre.

Bright Lights Windsor will shine on every night until Jan. 7 from 5:30 to 10 p.m., including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.

County of Essex offices will be closed from Dec. 24-26, reopening on Dec. 27. They will close again at 12 p.m. on Dec. 31 and remain closed through Jan. 1.

All branches of the Essex County Library will be closed Dec. 24-31 and Jan. 1. 

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit offices will be closed to the public Dec. 24- 26. 

All schools across Windsor-Essex will be on their winter holiday break, with classes resuming on Jan. 6. St. Clair College and the University of Windsor are also closed.
