NSW Waratahs coach Dan McKellar says a stint in the centres will be best for the returning Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii.

The 21-year-old code-hopper is returning for the Waratahs after five weeks on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Suaalii played fullback to start the season, but McKellar named this season’s star recruit in the centres for Friday night’s clash against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

The NSW coach said the decision was made to ensure Suaalii could get his hands on the ball without being forced into the running demands of the fullback position.

“We wanted to keep Joseph ticking along … but, understanding that he’s only two weeks back into full training, we felt that playing him in the front line would reduce his overall running load while still ensuring he gets his hands on the ball and influences the game,” McKellar said on Thursday.

With a six-day turnaround from the Waratahs’ win over the Brumbies last weekend, McKellar has decided to rest several players, including captain Hugh Sinclair and Wallaby Andrew Kellaway.

An injury to outside back Triston Reilly has paved the way for the debut of 21-year-old Archie Saunders.

Saunders impressed as a member of Australia’s under-20s team at the world championship last year, also breaking into the Warringah first grade Shute Shield side.

McKellar was confident in the young winger ahead of his maiden Super Rugby match.

“Archie is a really coachable kid. He chases kicks hard, he’s fast, powerful, and loves to compete. He’s been physical at training, and I couldn’t be prouder of him and his family for this opportunity,” McKellar said.

“When you expose young players, they need to be ready, and Arch has good players around him to support his debut.”
